Former fire chief honored with retirement event
Friends, family and colleagues recognized former Louisville Fire Chief Mike Stevenson with a retirement event on March 5.
Stevenson, along with his family members, greeted dozens of guests to the event.
Stevenson started his career in January of 1982 as a rookie firefighter. Later he was named the Louisville Fire Chief in May 1990. His official last day being chief was January 27.
The Present Mayor and two former Mayors spoke on behalf of Stevenson.
"Stevenson has wholeheartedly served the residents of the City of Louisville," said Mayor Will Hill as he read the proclamation from the city at the event. "Our sincere thanks and appreciation for his service of 28 years to the City of Louisville."
Former Mayor Robert Clark and former Mayor Daniel "Moe" Yarbrough also thanked Stevenson for his service.
"I picked Mike to be the fire chief and it was a good lasting decision," said Clark. "The fire department came along way under Mike."
Stevenson served under 5 different Mayors over his tenure.
"Mike was a good a chief as the city could expect," said former Mayor Yarbrough.
Senator Giles Ward also recognized Stevenson.
"A great deal of my 20 years as Louisville aldermen was with Mike as fire chief and I am honored to be a friend of his as well," said Sen. Ward.
State Fire Academy Executive Director Reggie Bell praised Stevenson for his dedication and service. Bell also outlined Stevenson's dedication to the fire service and his efforts not only in building up Louisville, but also his involvement in improving efforts throughout the state.
William Grantham, a former firefighter with the Starkville department, commented on Stevenson's dedication to his fellow firefighters and his always aiming to help others.
"We faced a lot of the same struggles and Mike was a true friend," said Grantham.
An emotional Stevenson thanked the over 200 attendees.
New Louisville Fire Chief Terry Johnson has been on the job for almost three months.
