The Patriots and Lady Patriots of Winston Academy head to Yazoo City this weekend to take part in the MAIS District 2AA Tournament being hosted by Manchester Academy.
The Lady Patriots are the second-seed in the four-team tournament and are set to take on No. 3 seed Carroll Academy at 4 p.m. on Friday. The WA boys, the No. 4 seed, face top-seeded Manchester at 8 p.m. on Friday.
Other games on Friday have the Carroll and Oak Hill Academy boys playing at 5:15 p.m. and the Oak Hill and Manchester girls tipping off at 6:30 p.m.
The girls consolation game is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the boys consolation at 2:15 p.m.
The girls championship tips off at 3:30 p.m. and the boys championship at 4:45.
The Patriots and Lady Patriots each dropped a pair of non-league games last week.
The Lady Patriots lost to Newton County Academy 68-41 last Tuesday and to Pickens Academy 53-49 on Thursday.
Winston fell behind early against Newton, trailing 19-11 after one quarter and 32-19 at the half. Barbara McMillin led WA with 16 points, while Samantha Perkins scored nine and the trio of Cassie Thomas, Rachel Peeples and Alex Thomas scored five each.
The WA girls led 14-4 after one quarter and 22-18 at the half against homestanding Pickens Academy, but couldn't hold off the Lady Pirates in the second half.
Peeples and McMillin scored 11 each for Winston, while Perkins hit for 10.
The Winston boys played a solid first half against Newton, before dropping a 51-45 decision.
The Patriots were up 12-10 after one quarter and stretched that out to 27-20 at the half, only to have the Generals take a 38-36 lead after three quarters of play.
Wyatt Roberts scored 13 to lead Winston's balanced scoring attack, while Cameron Paschal scored nine, Channing Bucklew eight and Bryce Mitchell seven.
Paschal scored 12 points and Roberts 10 in Winston's 67-37 loss to Pickens.

HAVING SUCCESS
Former Winston Academy standout Matthew Mitchell is enjoying some success of his own on the basketball court.
The Winston County native is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky and brought his Lady Wildcats to his home state on Sunday. The UK women took a solid 69-59 win over Mississippi State in the Humphrey Coliseum before a strong contingent of Winston Academy supporters.
The Lady Wildcats, now 18-3 on the season, are ranked No. 20 in the AP poll this week.
