Supervisors tackle many issues in two meetings By Joseph McCain The Winston County Journal Winston County Board of Supervisors addressed numerous issues in two lengthy November meetings. November 16 The board: ¥ Approved the election commissioners attendance at required meetings in Philadelphia. ¥ Approved an agreement with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the city to allow MDOT to pay $1856 of the $3712 of the city and county split of cost on the Airport fencing project. The city and county will be responsible for $928 each for the cost of the fencing project. The remaining 95 percent of the cost of the project is covered by the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) grant. ¥ Reviewed quotes for preparing the financials for the county with Watkins, Ward and Stafford having the lowest and only bid of $12,000. The board requested that all department heads prepare as much of the data as possible to keep the cost below the $12,000 cap set by Watkins, Ward and Stafford. ¥ Corrected an erroneous land sale. ¥ Discussed Winston County working in conjunction with 6 other area counties on gaining a Choctaw Language Coordinator to insure the county meets all election requirements of the Department of Justice for any Choctaws living in the county. Kim Ming, Circuit Clerk, noted that her office and Supervisor Luke Parkes had worked to follow all the Department of Justice requirements but the area counties plan may be the best option for the county to insure compliance, "We always thought we were in compliance," said Ming describing some of the latest discussions with Department of Justice Representatives. ¥ Discussed the Watershed assessment in the county and request board attorney contact the Watershed board president to discuss the us of the watershed funds and an update on the assessement. ¥ Discussed the solid waste expenses which now average about $29,000 a month. The average cost is down since the recent consolidation of routes and new county wide plan. ¥ Approved Nov. 2 minutes November 2 ¥ Approved October claims. ¥ Acknowledge receipt of grand jury report ¥ Transfer of funds for hauling of gravel from District 4 to District 3. ¥ Discussed nonpayment of personal and real property lists. ¥ Discussed upcoming holiday dates for the courthouse. ¥Approved minutes from October 19.
