The Winston County Journal

While the new executive director for the Winston/Neshoba Boys and Girls Club has not officially started, he still recently visited the two communities he hopes to play a vital role in.

"I love it," said Larry C. Dickens, the new executive director for the fledgling Winston/Neshoba Boys and Girls Club.

Dickens visited the two communities, the planned facilities for the clubs and met with some community members Thursday, August 31.

Dickens reviewed his background for the group and explained the important role a Boys and Girls Club can play in the community.

"I can offer hard work and a good attitude," said Dickens who is experienced in operating clubs with service at the Tupelo and Hattiesburg Clubs.

Ken McMullan, president of the Winston County Branch Board of Directors and Rae Ellen Gordon, president Neshoba Branch Board of Directors, noted Dickens was an excellent choice to help build and grow the clubs.

"We are so happy to have him," said Gordon. "He has the heart and passion for the role and this will be big for Winston and Neshoba Counties."

"We are excited to get you on board," said McMullan.

Dickens noted he is pleased with his upcoming role but that it is the community that makes a club successful.

"It is not me. It is you the community," said Dickens. "And I'm excited to be among people who have clearly shown they care about the children of the community."

The clubs of Winston and Neshoba aim to serve grades first through sixth grade in the first year of operation. Dickens and the board of directors hope to have the clubs up and going in September. Each club plans to serve at least 100 children in the community and presently have applications at the local schools.

The club plans to offer educational and recreational activities to all its members.

"We aim to have a well rounded program," said Dickens.

He added, "These children want our help. They are looking to bond and find role models. We can provide that as well as grow their views about the possibilities in life."

Dickens will actively begin his role in the building the clubs August 18.

Donations and

Volunteers

The Winston County Boys and Girls Club continues to seek donations, materials and volunteers.

With plans to open its doors in September, the Winston County Boys and Girls Club hopes the generosity of Winston County continues with donations of games, other items and funds to help make its first year a great success.

The Club will place a Founders Plaque on the wall of the Boys and Girls Club recognizing all who gave over $250 with different levels of recognition in place for $500, $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000 donors. To be recognized on the plaque, the donation must be made on or prior to August 15, 2008.

The club is also seeking volunteers to help prepare the building and volunteer for programs when the club gets underway.

"Volunteers will be key to the success of the program," said McMullan.

For more information on the project or to donate or get involved contact the WCEDP at 662-773-8719. To make donations of games, books, or other needed materials contact program committee chair Stacy Thames at 779-0644.
