The Winston Patriots got back on track last Friday night at Waynesboro with a hard fought 20-0 win over the Wayne Jaguars.
Winston spoiled the Wayne tradition of "firing the cannon" after each Wayne score as the old gun sounded when the Jaguars entered the field to start the game and then was sounded at the end of the game when the Jags left the field.
The explosion was a familiar sound at Wayne for the past two weeks as the Jaguars scored 78 unanswered points, but the Patriot defense made the enemy put their guns away as they recorded their fourth game of the season without allowing a touchdown.
Wayne's first encounter with the Patriot defense came on their first possession as they were stopped on a fourth down attempt a the Patriot 47 yard line on the games opening possession.
The Patriots followed with a near disaster on a bad punt snap that gave the ball back to Wayne at the Winston 45 yard line.
The Winston defense stepped up again after allowing a 1 yard gain which started a punting series between both teams for the next 2 series to bring the first quarter to an end with no scoring from either team. After Wayne had moved the ball the mid field 4 minutes into the second quarter, Austin Harrison picked up a Jaguar fumble and took it down the home sideline 52 yards for the score. Dylan Morgan added the point after to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead.
The Jags then put together a offensive drive that stalled at the Patriot 27 yard line, forcing a field goal attempt. But the Patriots partially blocked the kick and took over at their own 14 yard line.
Winston would remain in possession for the remainder of the second quarter with no scoring to bring the half to an end with the Patriots on top 7-0. Winston would then go right back to work to start the second half on a running attack that took them to the Wayne 4 yard line.
It was then with 9:28 left in the third quarter that Carlos Black took it over for the score with Morgan adding the PAT to increase the Winston lead to 14-0.
As both teams slugged it out for the remainder of the quarter with no additional scoring, the final period of play started with Winston at mid field. After moving it down to the Wayne 22 yard line, the Jag defense tightened up and stopped the Patriots on a fourth down attempt to take over with 7:52 left on the clock. Wayne then moved it out to mid field before punting it back to the Patriots. Winston advanced the ball to their own 44 yard line, and then Tyler Dalton found Austin Harrison open down the middle, who raced 56 yards for the score. The point after attempt failed and Winston ended the scoring of the night and took home the 20-0 victory.
Although it was a shut out, it was not an easy victory as the Patriots could only manage 27 total offensive yards in the first half. But the night finished better as Tyler Dalton led all rushers with 64 yards and followed by Austin Harrison's 36 and a score and Carlos Black's 35 and a score. Dalton added 100 yards in passing with his main receiver being Harrison, who finished with 68 and a touchdown catch. As dynamite comes in small packages, the gritty defense was led by Stephen Arnett who recorded 15 stops, followed by Kyle Harriman with 12 and Carlos Black with 9. Austin Harrison recorded an interception while Tyler Moffitt recovered a Wayne fumble. With Winston's 4-1 record, they will travel to Yazoo City this week to take on Manchester. This game is a very important district match up that could have an eventual bearing on the state playoff picture. It should be a good one.
