fought with sponsorships and message

The Winston County Journal

"We are proud to be a sponsor again this year," said Robert Higginbotham about the Winston County Medical Center and is support of BATTLE.

BATTLE or Breast Cancer Awareness to Teach Ladies Early Detection luncheon has a nine-year history in Winston County with the Winston County Medical Center among its staunchiest supporters.

The Winston County Medical Center through the BATTLE luncheon provides an array of information to the luncheon attendees on the importance of breast examines in the fight against cancer.

This partnership along with the support of the Winston County Extension office and Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians must be working since mammogram rates in Winston County have gone from 34 percent in 1999 to 68 percent in 2002, the highest rate in Mississippi.

Higginbotham encourages other businesses and persons to get involved in the program and the difference it can make.

The luncheon initiated by Peggy Crawford and Glenda Gregory is set for September 28 at noon in the Lake Tiak O'Khata dining area. The luncheon and fashion show is expected to receive over 300 attendees and will feature Dr. Freda Bush as the main speaker.

Models for the fashion show are still being sought with the group especially seeking breast cancer survivors for the show.

Anyone interested in attending or survivors interested in participating in the fashion show should contact Crawford at 773-3696 or Gregory at 773-5531 or the extension office at 773-3091. Those wishing to become a sponsor of the event should also contact Crawford or Gregory or the extension office.
