From press reports
On June 1, 2006, Edsel Adams, a Winston County resident, was presented the Korean War Service Medal by Senator Trent Lott.
Adams, 75, received the award as family and friends enjoyed the ceremonial event. The Korean War Service Medal was approved by the Korean government in 1953. However, the Pentagon did not initially give the medal its approval which is a prerequisite before a soldier may wear it.
Talk of the medal resurfaced in July 2000 at the 50th anniversary of the Korean War. In the spring of that year, the Unites States Pentagon approved the medal which is soemthing rarely done for a foreign medal.
Any veteran of the Korean War may receive the medal if they prove they served in Korea between the years of 1950 -1953 in the respective military branches.
Adams served in the Air Force during his tour of duty. Adam's sister, Sarah Dalton, who was present at the presentation said she remembered when her mother would read letters sent home which Adams wrote by candlelight because of blackout rules. The letters were few and the worry constant on the home front. His home at this time was Edinburg where he still has three brothers and a sister. he currently lives with his wife, Louise, in the Arlington Community of Winston County near Noxapater.
Prior to the medal presentation, Senator Lott read part of the letter, written by the Korean President which accompanied the medal. The South Korean government instigated the medal as a way of saying "thank you" to those who fough the hard battle in Korea.
To wear the medal on U.S. military uniforms, U.S. military personnel must have:
served between the outbreak of hostilities, June 25, 1950, and the date the armistice was signed, July 27, 1953;
been on permanent assignment or on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days, and
performed their duty within the territorial limits of Korea, in the waters immediately adjacent thereto or in aerial flight over Korea participating in actual combat operations or in support of combat operations .
