The Louisville Board of Aldermen continued with city cleanup efforts by addressing several unclean property issues in the Tuesday, March 7 regular meeting.

Zelma Baker who was in attendance was given 30 days to cleanup an abandoned trailer on her property. Baker acknowledged the request and noted she was already working on getting the trailer removed. The board also gave Donald J. Wyatt 30 days to clean up property at 209 Mississippi Street and the board noted the property owner was working on it and planned to clean up the area.

City Engineer Kenny Morris was cleared by the board to cleanup the property at 620 Metts Street after the 30 days had expired and the property was still declared unclean.

The property owner, S.L. Sethi, at 525 South Church Street was given an extension of 30 days to finish cleaning the property after making much progress and showing intention to complete the cleanup.

In other business, the board authorized the rezoning of 945 West Main from Residential 1 to Business 1 upon recognizing the petition met all the requirements.

Other meeting actions of importance included:

€ The board ordered two police cars at state contract price in previous meeting but wanted the item clarified on the minutes.

€ Josh Massey was sworn in as an animal control officer.

€ The board paid the monthly claims docket of bills with a cost of $151,281.

€ The board accepted the bid of $275 on a 1985 Chevrolet Van owned by the city.

€ The board approved the removal of Fire Department air packs from the fixed assets after they were donated to the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.

€ The board accepted low quote to purchase 3 new computers for the city at the cost of $1224 each.

€ The board approved Fire Chief Mike Stevenson to apply for 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant through Homeland Security.

€ Police Chief Ricky Peterson commended Investigator Gerald Hayes on his recent work involving the arrest of several juveniles in connection with a robbery at the Tobacco Store.

€ Jody Fulton in his role as animal control officer thanked the board for taking part in the open house of the animal control center and discussed ideas for future plans of the shelter. Fulton also noted the help Spiva Gene Richardson has been to the new animal control center. Fulton also noted that many volunteers had signed up to aid the animal control center and its mission.

€ Alderman Eugene Crosby inquired on where the matter stood with Jake's Recycling. Board attorney Taylor Tucker noted a date for the hearing in Chancery Court for the injunction was still waiting to be scheduled.

"We are attacking the problem of abandoned houses and getting properties cleaned up but Jake's is still operating in violation," said Crosby.

Taylor noted the court system took time and this was the best way to approach the problem.

The next regularly scheduled board of alderman meeting is set for March 21 at 5 p.m.
