Thirty Winston County students from the Winston-Louisville Vocational Center participated in a Job Shadowing Day recently.
Job Shadowing is an academically motivating and educational activity that gives students an up-close look at the world of work. Because of the cooperation of many employers and volunteers in our area, these students had the opportunity to spend a day with mentors as they went through a normal day on the job. Several of these students shadowed on site using actual skills from their vocational classes, such as drafting, the medical field, and automotive and diesel mechanics.
The following employers and businesses participated in Job Shadow 2006:
Robert Higginbotham, radiology at Winston Medical Center; Nellie Darden, R.N. at Winston Medical Center; Judy Mayo, First Baptist Church Day Care; Tabby Stewart, Joann Clark, and Amy Thomas, Department of Human Services; Holly Hawkins and Stephanie Stewart, Belinda Stewart Architect of Eupora; Mark McCool and Philip Crenshaw, ECCC History Department; Willie Earl Stevenson, Steveson Repair Shop; Rayford Manning, Manning Body & Paint Shop of Noxapater; Wade Baskin, GT Physical Therapy; Colleen Coleman, Head Start; Larry Massey, Nowell Funeral Home; Jennifer Collins, counselor at Noxapater High School; Patrick Schooler, coach at Noxapater High School; Dwayne Henning, Terry Martin Auto; Traci Thoms of Newton, MS, pharmaceutical sales; Harley Hollingsworhth, Donnie Woodruff, and Wyatt (Boo) Reed, Taylor Machine Works; Vettie Gates, Hairstyles Unlimited of Philadelphia; and Jeff Anderson Hospital in Meridian (nine different departments).
These employers and businesses gave students the chance to see how to implement proper educational skills. Jameesha Thames witnessed work skills in action at Winston Medical Center. Chasatie Wood participated at Winston Rehab with Physical Therapist Melanie Kirk. Victoria Toms worked in the First Baptist Church Day Care. Alicia Davis experienced the Department of Human Services. Albert Hunt worked at Taylor Machine Works. Zach Eaves spent time with the ECCC History Department. Brandon Copas worked at the Willie Stevenson Repair Shop along with fellow student T.J. Thomas.
Paul Crowson worked with Manning Body and Paint Shop in Noxapater. Derrell Miller experienced the work of GT Physical Therapy. Hynesha Pernell returned to Head Start but as a job shadower not as a student. Jessica White witnessed the work of Nowell Funeral Home. Lachaneka Robertson saw the latest trends by working at Hairstyles Unlimited in Philadelphia. Amber Trisel like Thames worked at the Winston Medical Center. Jamaal Coburn and Tiffany Thomas were at Noxapater High School but not as a student but learning about the teaching profession. Chelsie Burns worked with pharmaceutical sales representative at Louisville Medical Associates
Will McKinzie worked at Terry Martin Auto. Carlos Rice and Terry Smith also worked at Taylor Machine Works. Lindsey Clark worked on drafting skills with Belinda Stewart Architects in Eupora. Neshay Vickers, Marty Boatner, Megan Wray, Kanyatta Brown,
Chiquita Calloway, Samantha Wright, Hanna Miles, Chad Lewis, Jamarcus Chambers worked in various departments at Jeff Anderson Hospital to learn more about the medical field. Most of the students spent February 28 job shadowing while a few others spent other days.
