The Louisville-Winston County Airport is set to receive about $109,700 for improvements to the local airport.

The improvement project includes installation of perimeter fencing, and installation of a runway guidance system at the airport.

Mark Donald, airport board member, recently presented an update of these and other improvements to the Winston County board of supervisors.

Along with the federal funding for the Louisville-Winston Airport almost another $7 million has been approved for upgrades to other airports in Mississippi including Tunica, Grenada, Macon, Richton, Raymond, Wiggins, Tupelo, West Point, Pascagoula and Quitman.

"Airport improvements are essential to Mississippi's ongoing efforts to secure new jobs," Senator Trent Lott said. "Better transportation infrastructure is one of the keys to building any community, including rural communities whose airports are becoming increasingly important for commercial and economic development activity."

Senator Thad Cochran noted "I am pleased the Department of Transportation has released funding for airport enhancements. These improvements are important to economic development in Mississippi."

Congressman Pickering stated, "Air travel and transportation are vital to the economic development and commerce of our communities and state. These grants will provide improved safety, security and maintenance for these airfields to continue their important missions."

The Louisville-Winston Airport may also qualify in the future for Homeland Security and other grants.
